Lunar Occultation of Planet Uranus : Wed 14

A celestial 'heads up' for Wednesday (14th) evening.

 

These's a Lunar occultation of the remote Planet Uranus happening and not only does the weather look half decent,

but it occurs at a favourable time too, and is well placed in the constellation Aries.

 

If my timings are correct (from Derby) Uranus will slip behind the bright illuminated side of the waning, 78% sunlit moon at  22:31 hrs BST

and reappear on the un-illuminated side of the moon just under an hour later at 23:25 hrs BST.

 

Both objects will be in the eastern sky about 13º up at the start and 21º at the end of the occultation.

 

I know its only Uranus, not that exciting, and at magnitude +5.7 (similar to Jupiters moons) its only a binocular or telescope object

but hopefully, we'll be able to see and follow it, and maybe even image it.

 

Look forward to seeing an image of it on here perhaps....

And if you miss it, theres another one on December 5 this year.

That should show it nicely Martyn.

 

If i'm out observing, and Uranus is up, its something i always have a look at.

In my scope it shows the tiny disc quite nicely and is a greeny grey colour.

Neptune on the other hand, i find hard work as its so faint with my light pollution here.

 

I no longer have the aperture or the eyesight to try and detect Uranus' moons.

A 300mm + scope is needed usually and a good clear sky and decent seeing.

There are 4 of them that can be seen : Titania, Oberon, Ariel and Umbriel.

I've never been able to spot them myself even when i had the Dob, and i tried and tried.

Have you (or anyone else) seen them ??
