Popular Post +Derbyshire Dave Posted May 9, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted May 9, 2023 B29 Superfortress named "Over Exposed" was based at RAF Scampton, home of the dambusters, and more recently the red arrows. The aircraft bore the name Over Exposed after it was flown in July 1946 during Operation Crossroads to photograph nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll, including the dropping of an atomic bomb by B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream. On the third of November it set off on a mission from Scampton across the pennines carrying wages towards Warrington Difficult to imagine in these days when we carry GPS in our phones, but navigation through cloud in those days was very difficult. It was thought that the pilot probably started his descent on a pure time basis using dead reckoning from his airspeed. He started his descent too early and hit the very last top of Bleaklow at Higher Shelf Stones. All 13 people on board were killed. We climbed up to the crash site on Sunday, the view from the site shows he was right on the last edge.. There is still masses of debris around.. I'm wonder if the plane had been irradiated, after its service in Bikini ? Exposure to nuclear tests may have degraded the operational capabilities of the plane ?
