Ilkeston and District Astronomical Society (IDAS) – Solar Observing Day - Saturday June 3rd 2023 (Shipley Park, Heanor)

Recommended Posts

Evening All,

IDAS will be holding a solar observing event at the Shipley Park Visitor Centre, Heanor, Derbyshire,  this Saturday (June 3rd).  Members will have telescopes fitted with special filters to allow safe viewing of the Sun.  Please never look directly at the Sun without correct safety measures.  Members of the public are welcome to look through our member’s equipment free of charge; donations are welcomed and go towards the running of the Society.

We will be at the Visitor Centre from around 10:30am until around 4pm.  Members will be on hand to answer all your astronomical questions if you have any.  The weather forecast is looking promising, so fingers crossed for a nice day.

Hope to see some of you there.

Regards

I did drop by and had my first view of the sun through an H alpha filter. I was very impressed. There was a good supply of youngsters wanting to have a look so seemed like a successful event. Thanks

Evening All,

Just a quick thank you to everyone who was able to come along on Saturday to support our solar observing event at Shipley Park.  We had 100% blue skies all day, and we were able to show members of the public some fine views of the Sun.   We had two scopes set up with filters to show white light views, while another was set up for hydrogen alpha.  I think everyone who had a look at our nearest star through the telescopes were amazed, especially as there were quite a lot of sunspots visible.

We’ll be doing another Solar Day at Shipley Park on Saturday June 24th, so let’s hope we have similar weather then.   😊

Regards
