Popular Post Adam Firth Posted March 30 Popular Post Share Posted March 30 Last night I met up with a few fellow members of sherwood observatory at the obs. The weather forecast suggested maybe an hour of decent observing. Due to family commitments I couldn't make it till half past 8 by which time a few other members had set up. There were my 8" manual dob, an 8" f5 reflector on an eq mount and an 8" sct on the telescope pad plus the 24" reflector in the dome. Not including 3 seestars scattered about the place. I had great fun starting off with easy objects like the messier open clusters in auriga, the double cluster in perseus and the pleiades. By this time the globulars m13 and m3 had risen above our tree littered horizons so we compared views through different EPs and different scopes. An 82° 11mm ES gave lovely views of both through my dob. Some of the seestar crew had occasional looks through the scopes and grumbled about the fuzziness of the deep sky objects, they're just spoilt really ;). I tried out a 40mm 82° eyepiece on the pleiades as well and it gave a lovely view that my 70° 30mm couldn't compare to. Next up on my list was m81 and m82. Because of how high it was it was difficult to hunt down but I got them in the end and they gave a lovely view. After this I was looking for something a bit different so went for Kemble's cascade, a lovely string of stars leading to a small open cluster in camelapardalis. The observer with the 8" f5 asked me what I was looking at and he was very impressed with his first ever view of the cascade having never heard of it before. The last object I observed was the wonderful Leo triplet and its a shame I didn't bring my sketching stuff with me as it was the best view I've had of it. After this it was time for a quick snack break of pizza and a sit down and chat inside the obs itself before taking everything apart and going home. I left about 11 in the end and was quite content with my observing session, as much as I love observing on my own, it's nice to spend some time with other people who have the same interests sometimes. +Streetbob, +Glafnazur, +Ibbo and 2 others 5 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He's up most weeks for the general get togethers and also does a 'things to observe' for the podcast.
