I was cracking through the ice on Sunday morning, coughing up my lungs, to get a few reasonable pictures of Mercury, Venus and Saturn rising in Bradgate, thinking that if I could spend my entire food budget for the next twelve months on thermal gear I might be able to spend a few hours there trying to get pictures of the Geminids next Thursday night / Friday morning.

Is anyone else trying to do the same from any other site in the area?

Hi Rob and a cold welcome to EMS. ;)

Hope you enjoy the forum, as for the meteor shower, if it is clear and I'm free, I will be in the back garden.

Hi Rob and a warm welcome to EMS :)

It sounds like you've come to the right place. We have two dark where we meet on a regular basis at Belper and Wymeswold. So yes - there's bound to have been someone doing a similar thing lol (though some do have home obsys). You'd be very welcome to meet up with us at a session (next one probably this w/e) and I can recommend our quarterly meet on the 15th Dec.

The quarterlys are special meetings where we do various activities like talks, workshops, and 1 to 1 sessions etc, as well as the normal observing and imaging. Meantime enjoy the forum and hope to meet you soon :)

Hi Rob, a warm welcome to EMS.

It can put a damper on the whole night if you get cold, especially your feet. Once they are cold you stay cold. So think of what you think you might need and double it. You can always take stuff off if you get too warm, but if you haven't got it, you are going to get miserable.

Have a look at this and see if it helps.

Yeoman's is a good place to have a ferret around, and Go Outdoors can be good value.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks for the welcomes and kind words about the picture. Staying warm is actually the easy bit. Working out what the hell to do with any bits of kit is always the tricky bit. My camera is fairly new so I had an 'interesting' time trying to change lenses in the dark that morning. But my replacement lens cap was delivered yesterday so it didn't work out too badly in the end.

I'll probably have a look at the cricket club in the next couple of days (I wonder if I can get back the shoes I left there in '06?) and I'll do my best to get there for the meeting on the 15th.

Is anyone taking their kit on the 15th?

I'm sure most will take their setups on the 15th if the forecast is looking good.

Welcome to EMS :)
