Managed to get these tonight in the short time that we had. Both taken with unmodded Canon 1000d and Helios 8 inch newt on an EQ5.

M42 is about 14 x 30sec iso 800 and 10x darks, the flame is about 30 x 30 sec iso 800 and 10 x darks. Both stacked in dss.

Mark, just checking through my many books and I think we have taken the same photo, but I think it is NGC 2024 the Tank Track Nebula unless you disagree?

Ron

PS Just Googled it and you are right!! The Flame Nebula, so why does my best book call it the Tank Track Nebula ???

Shame you couldn't get longer exposure on the Flame there - I'm sure you would have picked up the HorseHead as well - they are faint though - still a nice capture. M42's smashing as well Mark - good shots :)

Was it guided or unguided?
