Hi all, new to site and astronomy! Bought first telescope last week inspired by Stargazing Live and used it for first time last evening with some success!

Always looking for advice on good areas of night sky to 'break myself in' as it were?

Welcome to EMS! Great to hear you managed to use a scope last night, usually upon purchasing new gear it stays cloudy for weeks. Did you by any chance attend the Stargazing Live events at Long Eaton School?

If you have any questions please pop them up in the beginers area or where ever else it may fit into the boards and I'm sure somebody will be able to assist.

A good place to start your journey is to download Stellarium to your computer or smartphone. It is a free application that shows in real time what is where in the sky, it's a real aid to learning your way around the sky. A good book to buy would be Turn Left At Orion, or a decent star chart book such as Sky and Telescopes excellent book.

What scope have you bought?

We have regular meets at our two darksites, one is in Belper, the other in Wymeswold. Your first visit is free, after that we pay £20 a year towards rent etc to keep the sites going. Look out in the announcements forum for meets which often happen at short notice when we see there may be a break in the weather.

For now though, make a brew, put your feet up and enjoy the forums :)

Hi Tim and a warm welcome to EMS :)

As mentioned feel free to join us for a free session at Belper or Sawley - get a feel for the group and see if you'd like to join up. Keep your eye on the Info and Announcements board ("EMS Meets" section) for the next session (usually at weekends). Meetings can be arranged (or cancelled) at very short notice depending on weather conditions.

Look forward to seeing you soon - meantime enjoy the forum and feel free to ask any questions you like in the Beginners section. :)

Welcome to EMS Tim :) I did the exact same thing when stargazing live was on last year, went out and got a scope and signed up here, loved it ever since :)

Thanks for all comments, been working away since sign up and only home briefly before heading off again in the morning! With snowy sky's abound for next few nights I'm itching for a break in the cloud to try again! Will keep look out for suggested books, apps whilst in this quiet watching period. Hope to attend meeting as soon as practical, but not easy with workload currently. Anyhow, thanks again one and all!
