Hi everyone,

Totally new to the area and it looks like it may be a clear night. I live in the centre of Newark so don't see that much sky and have no garden. Would love to take a drive out to get the scope out. Can anyone recommend somewhere within 30mins drive? I'd love to have a gander at Saturn if I can.

Cheers!

Hi Stacey and a warm welcome to EMS :)

Our dark site at Wymeswold can't be more than half an hour away from you straight down the A46. Turn right at Six Hills. You'd be most welcome to join us there for a session and an intro to the group. Keep an eye on the Info and Announcements section "EMS Meets" thread for the next one (usually at weekends).

Meantime enjoy the forum :)

Hi!

That would be awesome, I'm not very good with forums and am having a read through some of the many sections now.

Would it be ok to head down there this evening? Don't have many clear night opportunities and have a starter scope I'm just giddy about trying.

Thanks for the reply!

You need to be a "dark site" member to use the field but we encourage newbies to join us when we have a meeting and others are present - it's a lot safer especially for females - and I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to a dark field in the middle of nowhere on their own. Plus you need a key holder present to get in.

But I can sense and understand your excitement very well - we were all like that with our fist scope lol. Best thing for now is to try a small session at home in the garden - then come to a meeting later where you'll get plenty of help setting up, a demo of how good your scope is, and a good practical introduction to the night sky and how to find stuff.

The stars will still be there....lol

If you've any specific questions about your scope then post a thread in the beginners section and someone will be along with an answer soon :)

Hi Stacey and welcome!

Yours is an enthusiasm we've all had. :) I myself saw Saturn for the first time a couple of weeks ago, having been into the hobby for well over a year.

P.S. Your avatar/photo is giving me vertigo.

Hi Stacey, I'm just 20 mins up the A17 at RAF Cranwell, I suggest as it's a clear night you perhaps use it to drive around and check out sites? The showground area, Norton Disney, that area is pretty dark?

Hi Everyone!

I will definitely come to a meeting and get to know you all, and leech all your hard earned knowledge lol.

I have just convinced a friend to drive round the brant broughton/fulbeck area with me tonight, flask of tea at the ready and a few clever apps on my phone to help out.

Wish me luck!

Hello and welcome. I found a spot near granby which is darkish and easy to work out of the back of the car. It's probably wise to always go with someone just to be safe. I'm happy to drive out that way sometimes if you want to meet up, but i'm not very good at astronomy so don't turn to me for help on that front.

Hi,

Just got home from an absolutely fantastic night. Found a great spot not far from fulbeck and found saturn pretty easily. I've been watching it for a couple of hours! So stunning. I have the Skywatcher 130p, its my first scope (I'm a student so have to watch my budget). The rings were so clear! My first time viewing saturn, so when I found it in my eyepiece I could barely contain myself.  Hoping for some more wonderful clear nights.

Welcome to the forum Stacy, I was viewing Saturn as well last night, as you say it looked wonderful, the rings are really tilted now, unlike a few years ago, did you see the moons of Saturn as well?

Hi welcome along Stacey, you'll never forget the first time you see Saturn. There's something really magical about it.

Sounds like you had a fantastic night.

If you have a budget, stay away from imaging. Your budget will turn into a deficit.

The scope you've got is a good one to get into the hobby, so you've made a wise choice.
