Study shows Moon may have same source of water as the Earth.

Using a multicollector ion microprobe to study hydrogen-deuterium ratios in lunar rock and on Earth, a new study suggests that water on the Moon is leftover from when a giant collision sent a disc of debris from Earth to form the Moon, about 4.5 billion years ago.


 



 



Our work suggests that even highly volatile elements may not be lost completely during a giant impact,†said Van Orman. “We need to go back to the drawing board and discover more about what giant impacts do, and we also need a better handle on volatile inventories in the Moon


 



 


I find this quite interesting especially after our recent visit to the Open University.

New findings from the University of Michigan indicate that the early moon was wet and that water there was not substantially lost during the moon’s formation, contradicting the predominant lunar formation theory.



 


Some interesting developments in our understanding IMO.
