Yet another food scandal!

There have been a number of disturbing food scandals in the news recently. The latest one, is up to 50% pork in Halal meat has been served to school kids in Leicestershire.

This however pales in comparison to a report I heard on radio 4 this morning. It concerns rat meat being passed off as lamb.

This is further complicated by restaurants and street vendors who sell rat based products legitimately, and the patrons who have a predilection for this delicacy.

They have had to advertise that their products are caught in the countryside, and are wholesome for this reason,  and not caught in the sewers as the alleged lamb is.

I suppose we should count ourselves lucky. Of course this might change in the future when someone over here thinks it might be a money spinner.

Support the British farmers, you really do need to know where your food comes from.

I don't want milk at 50p for two litres if it is coming from abroad, lets pay a little bit more and know the providence and quality of our food.

Once all our farmers have been priced out of the market and gone, their skills and knowledge will be lost. Then we are at  the mercy of people like these.

The rats they're talking about are ricefield rats (rattus argentiventer). They live out in the rice fields and don't loiter in sewers like rattus rattus. Eating them is quite common in Cambodia and parts of Thailand. They taste like chicken

Lets face it people if all the facts were to be released about exactly what we are eating was published we would all stop buying processed and packaged food stuffs.

Not such a bad thing in my opinion but then I live in the countryside and cook most of my stuff from fresh.

On a national level however it would be a total disaster.
