Using VLBA and the European VLBI Network, astronomers were able to accurately measure the distance to double-star system SS Cygni, resolving a major problem in the understanding of a class of stars that undergo regular outbursts.


 



 


This makes me wonder how many other measurements have previously been so far wrong? 370 is a lot closer than 520light years, the discrepancy is greater than 33% :o

That is quite a difference!

 

Not really Tobias.

Remember in the olden times they used cloth tape measures and they did tend to stretch a bit especially if they got wet.

Unlike the metal ones of today.

I'm surprised they've never put a pair of satellites up to do this. Good work though.
