Guest Matt Posted August 13, 2013 Share Posted August 13, 2013 Hi All, new to the forum and thought I'd say hi. I am a 'very' amateur photographer and enjoy looking at the stars. I'm looking to invest in a go-to telescope and camera mount in the near future to see what I can achieve. Any help and advice would be welcome. Oh, and I'm from sunny* Northampton! dawson Posted August 13, 2013 Share Posted August 13, 2013 Hello and welcome. Don't rush out and buy a scope without getting lots of advice first and seeing some kit in operation. If you want to do astro imaging you really need an equatorial mount. Maybe start a thread in the beginner area about what you'd like to d and how much you can spend. Welcome anyway. Brantuk Posted August 13, 2013 Share Posted August 13, 2013 Hi Matt and a warm welcome to EMS I don't know about Northants but just over the border into Leicestershire there's some quite dark spots towards and around Market Harboro. You would be welcome to join us for a session to use a few different scopes and pick up a bit of advice - but our nearest dark site to you is Wymeswold just north of Leicester (might be a bit too far). dawson Posted August 13, 2013 Share Posted August 13, 2013 Matt, google "light pollution map uk" and you'll find some massive files which show different sorts of light pollution which will take an age for your computer to load. Have a look for areas near you with least pollution; i suspect it will be towards your east, given the cities to your north, south and west. Northampton probably also has an astronomical society, so try looking them up. Universities sometimes have outreach programmes too with lectures, or open days, you could explore that.
