Attenborough NR birdwatching 9.9.2013

There has been reports of a juvenile White Winged Black Tern at Attenborough for the past few days so I went down to check it out.

When I arrived I was greeted by about 20 twitchers around Coronies Pond looking at the juvenile White Winged Black Tern and also a juvenile Black Tern. The question was which one was which. These two birds are almost identical and we watched them for a good one hour diving in catching food etc but no one was really sure which one was which.

I was chatting to a few blokes from Pontefract and we decided to walk to the roosting site and see if they land there, it's about a 25 minute walk away and when we arrived we saw them both perched together on some poles sticking out the water.

They stayed for at least 25 minutes just cleaning themselves and I would say the  juvenile White Winged Black Tern was different from the juvenile Black Tern in the following ways.

  • Had a shorter bill
  • Has longer brighter legs
  • has more white around the eyes

All in all a great day, met some interesting people and another tick in the book. When my son gets back from school I'll take him down, hopefully they will still be there.

Good birds Mick, certainly the right time of year for rare passage birds! Good life tick, sure James will enjoy then! (Think Steve is right!) ;)
