Guys,

For planetary observing.  Whats the best option (with HEQ5 mount)?

  1. 180 MAK
  2. SCT 8 - 10"
  3. A big frac i.e. 120 - 150mm?

Quite fancy the MAK and heard a lot of good reviews but some recommend a large frac and not necessarily an APO.

Any advice gladly received as I have been toying with the idea for sometime and this games not cheap so I'd like to get it right!

The heq5 will handle the mak and sct better than the frac, from experience. A 120 long focus frac will be ok on the mount but a 150 f8 will make its eyes water a lot, i know ive tried it.

As far as performance on planets a quality refractor wins every time over the mak and sct, Im talking from experience again, better contrast due to no central obstruction and you dont have to faff with collimation, (typically) I have 8 refractors and have used and owned maks, scts and newts but alway come back to quality refractors for planetary and lunar.

However, to avoid stressing your mount the mak is the best option for you

I'd choose either a 120mm achro or a 150mm Mak. If you want to go larger then upgrade to NEQ6 - there's a fair few s/h bargains around now the new Az/Eq6 and Eq8 are out. :)
