Is it possible to drive up there yourself in your hire car?

Yes it is, but you need to be confident on the wrong side of the road in the dark. The road up the mountain could worry a few less confident drivers. There are twists and turns and cliff edges to steer clear of, but there is a lane for each direction with a white line in the middle and at the edges, but no barriers in some places to stop you taking a dive over the edge :)

Fewer potholes than English roads though, so that's a bonus :)

Stargazing hotel above the clouds on the mountain at Tenerife. Pretty much guaranteed mag 7 skies 365 days a year unless you are really unlucky with high altitude cloud reducing the view to mag 6 :D

If you haven't seen this you'll enjoy the read, among other interesting stuff it mentions observing from the hotel with a 25" dob :) .
