Star trail, North Wales, 27.11.2013

About an hours worth of subs looking North West from Trawsfynydd last night (21:45 to 22:40). Each frame is 20 seconds, f/3.5, 10mm focal length on Canon 600D, ISO 6400 (don't ask, this was a mistake). Stacked with http://startrails.de/  and levels and curves slightly altered in Photoshop. The lens misted up after this despite the hand-warming pad applied to it; I need another 10m lead for my dew controller. The bright central area is the Milky Way. There is a time-lapse video too of it which I'll try and upload:

Thanks Kim. The wide angle lens distorts the rotation. To be honest, I hadn't realised Polaris was in the shot so hadn't planned for that bit of circum-polar action going on!

I do like the time lapse - gives one a real feeling for the Earths wobble and tilt as the stars not only rotate but sink a bit as well below the horizon. You can see this by speeding up Stellarium with the ecliptic switched on and you see it tilting over several hours - but the time lapse shows it for the whole sky. Very good demonstration. :)

And another star trail. Looking south. You can make out the shape of Orion to the right of the middle. About 550 subs, each of 20 seconds, taken between 03:30 and 06:30. ISO 1600, f/4, 19mm focal length on Canon 6D. No darks, and this is something I must start remembering to do as there are still a fair few hot pixels around.

Yes it does.

Any thanks Ron. My exploits with Jupiter at 3am were awful so I'm leased I at least have something to prove getting up at 3am was worth it :)

If I have many more nights light last night, I may ditch the telescope and just stick with a DSLR and a mount. 180 Mak in the for sale section soon lol.

Thanks. The power station which is being decommissioned (will take 50 years apparently) is to the north of me, so the glow was behind :)

Yup they are also doing Wylfa a short distance from my home town of Holyhead. When the cloud from chernobyl reached us it set off all the external radiation detectors at wylfa
