Registar, an interesting discovery.

Do you use Registar for multi panel mosaics? If so, you will know that geometric distortions build up unless you use a widefield template image and register your panels to that. I think I have the solution, which foolishly I had in the back of my mind for years before trying it. You don't need a widefield photo, you can crop out your final image from a planetarium and Registar will recognise it. So here's the drill;

- crop your final image framing from a planetarium (I used SkyMap).
- resize this up to the size of your final mosaic image.
- Give it to Registar which recognizes it as an image of the sky (Yessss!!!!)
- Register your panels to it, throw away the map and join the panels...

No geometric distortions. You are left with the geometry of the map, which is a true projection.
