Two new canons, 5D and 5DR, coming in June. Both with 50 mega pixel, full frame sensors.

Slightly out of my price range at $3500+

Why on earth would you want 50.6MP , surely more dynamic range, cleaner shadows and higher ISO is more important.

Processing 8 mp raw frames makes my pc,s eyes water, 50 mp would seize it up for sure. Mind you 50 mp on lunar through my maj, hmmmmm :-)

Crikey, that's 7000 pixels per side!

That would take a bit of scrolling around at full res on your average screen.

So it has now exceeded the recognised resolution of a 6x7 medium format camera. Throw away your Hasselblads!! (don't forget to *3 to get your raw tiff file size  per r,g and b, data from Kodak)

Rough pixel equivalents for format

 35mm                             - 24   X 36  X 11574   =    10,000,000 =   10 MegaPixels
 645    medium format - 60   X 45  X 11574   =    31,249,999 =   31 MegaPixels
 6X7    medium format - 60   X 70  X 11574   =    48,611,111 =   48 MegaPixels
 6x9    medium format - 60   X 90  X 11574   =    62,499,999 =   62 MegaPixels
 4X5" (Inch) Film          - 102 X 127 X 11574 =   149,930,555 =  149 MegaPixels
 8X10" (Inch) Film        - 203 X 254 X 11574 =   596,782,407 =  597 MegaPixels
 11X14" (Inch) Film      - 279 X 356 X 11574 = 1,149,583,333 = 1.15 GigaPixels

Where 11574 is pixels/sq. mm.

I think the point is that it is really only now that the censors are exceeding a standard 35mm negative, which would be a 30Mb file size. Even though most people had their photos processed at 6*4" using little of the data held on the neg. You can now use the data off the censor without interpolation. And whilst 50Mp is overkill for us at $3500 it is not far away from the first decent digital cameras that came out, my first 1gb SD card cost £72. The SCSI  Canon neg scanner I have cost half of that camera!

Looks like the 5DS will be £2999, the 'R' version, with low pass cancellation filter will be £3199

Also Sony have a new A9 ? full framer with a rumoured 46mp coming soon.

Be interesting to see if they'll drop the price a bit on their other A7 series, but i digress.
