Focuser

Ideally little or none. A tiny bit of play may be tolerable for visual, but usually there is a knurled screw to tighten it up a bit.

On some focusers you can tighten them up if they are too loose, it's normally via some small screws on the underside of the focuser,

Is yours not a Crayford style?

No it is an older Rack & Pinion, my issue is I have bought a Laser collimator that I cant be certain is square because there is play in the rack

This is one of the problems with collimation.

You will find your precision is affected by slop in the focuser as well as slop at the focuser eyepiece opening.

That is why many people either use a hotech collimator that adjusts for slop or one of those adjustable self centering adapters to take out the slop.
