First TV EP !

Hi guys !

Just to let you know that I got my first TV eyepiece. It's a Panoptic 24mm. With my 1200mm focal lenght it'll give me a 50x magnification.

This weekend will be cloudless, so I'm in a hurry to try it and see if my collimation done last week is good.

Next TV EP on the buy list is a Nagler Type 6 13mm.

After that I may buy a TV Powermate 2.5x

the 24mm will give me a 9.6mm focal and give a 125x mag.

the 13mm will give me a 5.2mm focal and give a 230x mag.

With that I will have 24, 13, 9.6 and 5.2 focals.

Does it sound a good planning ? Any thoughts ?

Thanks

Fred

That 24mm Panoptic is a beaut of an eyepiece - it's crystal clear and gives amazing views - one of the best in my set - you're gonna love it Frederic. The only one missing from your planned set (imho) is something over 30mm for really wide views of the larger objects like M31, double clusters, and some nebulae.

I've not given my Naglers a good run out yet since I got them due to weather - but had a short "between the clouds" session in the yard and they are looking very promising. :)

Wow, nice eyepiece Frederic. That will be a beauty for the Galaxy season.

You don't know Kim, but trust me, he knows his eyepiece's! :D

As Kim says you need that big widefield one, so I would buy a 35mm Panoptic to finish the set.

Nice purchase Fred. I have the 13mm ethos and can't rate it highly enough :)

These are all really top notch eyepieces that you will thoroughly enjoy observing with. The 31mm Nagler would also be a great choice for a real low power, very wide field ep. Very expensive and very heavy though.

Good choice mate, I have one too, it virtually lives in my 200p. Along with a powermate it covers my wide field and medium mags.

I do fancy a 35mm panoptic though.

The 35mm Panoptic in a 20" dob is just awesome - I've seen the dust lanes in M31 with this configuration and the view is just gobsmacking. Just can't fit the whole galaxy in but it shows the main parts in exquisite detail (b/w of course). :)

Thank you all for you comments. TV EPs cost a lot but I know they worth it.

For the ultra wide low power EP, what would be the best choice between 35mm PAN or 31mm Nagler ? or maybe both ?! mouahahah B)

31mm Nag is sold 679.95 $ CAD

35mm Pan is sold 399.95 $ CAD

Will it worth paying 280$ more for a Nag ?

Thanks

Fred

Remember the Panoptic is 68° while the Nagler is 82°.

The Nagler is also a lot heavier so if balancing is an issue go for the Panoptic.

Hi Mick, I know about aFOV between Pan's and Nag's.

I will have to try before buying to see what's better (35mm pan or 31mm nag).

Until then, next buy is a 13mm Nagler. So it gives me time to figure it out.

I've not looked through the 31mm Nagler - I've seen one though and it's a beast - but it's a good idea to try and borrow them to compare before buying. :)

The 31mm Nagler used to be my ultimate eyepiece. I hardly ever used any other ep and often doubled it with a TV Big Barlow.

I know that it is not suited to everyones eyes. Some people (very few) see a kidney bean blackout effect when looking through some Naglers, although the 31mm suffers less than most from this. I've had several Naglers and can only say that they were incredible, and I could not fault them in any way and saw no blackout effects. I'm just addicted to wide apparent fields now, and won't entertain anything less than 82 degrees.

When spending that sort of money, and they are still very expensive second hand, it is obviously best to try one first. But I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Here is a link to some interesting info about Naglers...

I don't know why Televue didn't mention the 31mm nagler on their recommandation for dobsionians.

Low Power, Wide Field:

Either 26mm Nagler Type 5
or 35mm Panoptic
or 21mm Ethos

Medium Power

Either 12mm Nagler Type 4
or 13mm Nagler Type 6
or 13mm Ethos
or 14mm Delos

Finally, here is what I will buy in the future.

*powermate 2.5                                  => 215 $
                                   with PM
Panoptic 35mm 34x                            => 415 $
Panoptic 24mm 50x   -> 125x             => bought
Nagler   13mm 98x     -> 245x             => 330 $
        or
Delos    12mm 100x   -> 250x             => 370 $
Delos     8mm 150x    -> 375x             => 370 $
Delos     6mm 200x    -> 500x             => 370 $

This will give these magnification steps.

34x
50x
98x or 100x
*125x
150x
200x
*245x or 250x
*300x

And my next purchase could be either Pan 35mm or Delos 6mm.

Any reason why you have not gone for the ETHOS?

a 13mm Ethos has 100 degree field of view, much better than the delios or the panoptics?

That will fit M31, M44, the double cluster etc in, while at 13mm still give dark background.

Couple that with a 2x or 2.5x power mate and you have a good planet ep there.

1 ep, 1 power mate, rather than multiple ep's?

They are my future ep purchases, I dont think I have the need for anything else?

I wanted to get EPs at 50x steps....

Ethos are very expansive, but on the other side as you said 1 EP + 1 PM cost less than the list I provided....

I will consider this.

I just saw the specs. Ethos 13mm is sold 639$ CAD instead of Nagler 13mm at 330 $ CAD.

So if I save the $$$ for an Ethos 13mm and Ethos 6mm that could be an option.

Why would you want a 6mm Ethos when you have a 2.5x power mate?

Power mating the 13mm would give you a 5.2mm ep (near enough to a 6mm).

Sorry if I am messing up all your plans!

That's what forum are for ! :) Messing up plans ;)

hahahahha

But you're right about the focal lenght.

On the other side I already have a Panoptic 24mm. I love it. But should I keep or save more $$$ for a wider FOV EP ?
