There's a lot of information that you can get by clicking the link on my signature. If you can use your grandad's "bins" then it's a good place to start and unless they are very poor you'll see lunar craters. The Moon is quite low down but is placed for observation soon after sunset.


 


If you have a compact digital camera you can use it to take photographs of the stars.
