Picture of the Month August 2013

Hi folks

Due to the change of forum web hosting this month many photos submitted have dissappeared due to the change in forum format. Unfortunately this means I can only view those images submitted with links to the likes of.. astrobin, flickr, dropbox etc.

Therefore to judge potm now would be a little unfair on those who have lost their images in the changeover.

Thus the Potm August roundup will be postponed till the 21st September.

Could I ask all those who have posted images which have now gone and wish to be included in the roundup during august please update your original post with a link to the image.

Instructions on how to link image files are in Craigs how to in the announcements section

Sorry for the inconvenience

Picture of the Month August 2013

Hi again folks and sorry for the delay in the roundup and award but I felt it only fair to postpone it to give everyone a chance to get their images linked after the hosting move.

So without further ado here's my roundup

Comets, Asteroids, Meteors & Meteorites

A lovely image of a Perseid and milky way shot over New Bridge was submitted by Peter Shah here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5655-i-managed-to-get-one/. The lighting on the bridge as well as the detail of our own galaxy superbly complement each other in this shot and then it gets better with a perseid to boot, well done Peter.

Deep Sky Objects

Blimey, you can tell the weather was favourable in august, lots of folks submitted images, great stuff keep em coming. Thus because there are so many, again I will have to limit the roundup to the ones which stand out otherwise the roundup will go to several pages

I'm envious of Ibbos M8 in Ha http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5620-m8-another-tweak-sorry/,    1 because they are  good images and 2 because I cannot get this object from my observatory due to trees. Nicely done Steve, tons of detail in there. Also his SH2 - 155 Cave Nebula in Cepheus is lovely, lots of detail and showing why its called the cave here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5614-cave-with-a-bit-of-colour-wip/. Also the image of the Helix here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5775-ngc7293-in-ha-wip/ deserves a mention and shows great promise for addition of S11 and O111.

All this proves what I have been saying about Steve all along, he must be nocturnal to take so many images :-)

I like Grahams M33 here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5575-m33-from-a-night-you-only-dream-of-04082103/ again lots of detail, the Ha regions showing nicely and those nights are truly magical when you get them I agree Graham. Also his Flaming Star is nice and detailed http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5653-flaming-star-neb-ic405-in-ha/, method 2 is the better one IMO Graham.

Tbird gave us a look at the supernova in M74 here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5568-supernova-sn-2013ej-in-m74/ good catch Paul.

Ollypenrice gave us a gob smacking view of the Eagle and Swan Nebulas with kit and skies that we can only dream of here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5580-eagle-and-swan-twin-taks/ Superb image Olly and fascinating to see the area in such a wide field it took me awhile to recognise it. Also his Cocoon shows the nebula in superb detail and colour http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5677-cocoon-in-several-fls/

The detail in Gliders Crescent Nebula in Ha is superb here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5554-ngc6888-in-ha-from-last-night/ lots of whispy stuff in there. And his Elephants Trunk (IC1396)  ;http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5661-ic1396-12813/ is nicely composed

I do like Ron Clarkes Veil shots here  http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5629-east-and-west-veil-nebulas-09082013/, lots of colour and detail, well captured Ron. Also here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5704-witches-broom/

A wider view of IC 1396 by Sheila shows superb detail and lots of whispy stuff here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5659-ic1396-from-last-night/  plus Sheila caught the Nova in Delphinus http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5705-nova-delphinus-2013/, good catch Sheila.

Lunar

Only one lunar this month submitted by Xanthic showing a nice full moon http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5728-moon-20082013/

Planetary

No images submitted

Solar

Again, the number of images submitted shows we had good weather, long may it continue

Graham has been giving us some good full disc shots here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5569-its-busy-busy-busy-on-the-sun-today/, and here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5635-solar-in-ha-from-this-afternoon/

Ibbos been busy with some superb shots in Ha,but my favourite is  http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5774-ha-full-disc-26-8/. These just disprove my earlier theory that Steve is nocturnal, does he ever sleep?   :-)

A good 1st solar from ben72 here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5768-first-solar-pic/ and a second here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5796-sun-31-9/

And Ron Clarke gave us a nice white light full disc here http://www.flickr.com/photos/96916253@N03/9622842844/

Widefield

Again, good weather and lots going on this month have got folks out with the cameras

I like Tbirds planetary line up http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5564-planetary-line-up/, wished I had got up early to see this. But his ISS pass even though not widefield shows dedication http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5697-iss-16-8-13/. To be able to take a shot with detail like this from a manually tracked Dob gets my admiration. Also his widefield MW

shots are very detailed http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5662-a-couple-of-milky-way-widefields/

Dawson gave us a nice widefield from Wymeswold dark site here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5660-widefield-from-wymeswold-12812/

Tibbz2 showed us his 1st widefields http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5781-first-widefield-attempt/ well done Tobias, youve now started on the long slippery imaging slope :-)

Another widefield newbie, Perkil8r gave us some 1st widefields here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5652-first-go-at-widefield/

A Perseid featured inone of  dardanos widefields here http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5644-perseid-night-at-st-pierre-observatory-near-montmagny-qc/ a good selection Frederic

My choice for this month has been a difficult one because there has been so many excellent images (sorry to those I have not mentioned its just that there were so many images this month I couldnt mention everyone due to space).

There have been lots of fantastic images this month that made me go Wow but eventually I managed to narrow it down to 2 images that made me go WOW! (Yep in capitals and exclamation mark) and that was Peter Shahs Perseid http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5655-i-managed-to-get-one/ and tbirds ISS shot  http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5697-iss-16-8-13/.

I gave it awhile after deciding between these 2 and went back to them and flicked between them and the one that gets my final vote is ........................................................................................................................................

tbirds ISS pass in close up. shot  http://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/5697-iss-16-8-13/

To me this shows dedication to getting an image using a manually tracked scope on a difficult fast moving object and my hat is off to you Paul for capturing this elusive object in detail, a key for Astrophotography Tools (APT) is on its way to you

If there were an award for the most prolific imagers I reckon there would be a contest this month between Ibbo and Graham, both have submitted loads of superb images, when do they sleep?

Well done all and keep em coming.

Please note September PoTM round up will be on the night of the 30th as I am unavailable for 3 days prior and wont have time to post on the 1st Oct as I will be frantically throwing stuff in the back of the van and heading off to Kelling. So if its a clear night on the 30th after I post I will include last minute submissions taken on that day in the October round up.

Well done Paul, and all the other honorable mentions there. Also many thanks to Phil for the write up and doing the judging, it seems to me the standards are raising every month, it's a task I do not envy in the slightest!

Yes well done Paul; it was an amazing shot; even more amazing given how you took it.

Thanks Phil for the summary of some really wonderful images too, lots which I'm not looked at before.
